We are excited to welcome Madeleine Stewart to Red & Shorty's for a show while she is home from Scotland.
The Madeleine Stewart Trio is a new band combining Madeleine Stewart’s bold fiddle playing, Rory Matheson’s inventive piano, and Craig Baxter’s driving bodhran. The three musicians met at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where they are all currently studying. They draw from traditional music as well as Madeleine’s creative writing, which is complemented by Rory’s and Craig’s versatile accompaniment.
Madeleine Stewart is a fiddler whose music is based in the eclectic traditions of New England. Originally from New Hampshire, she was awarded an apprenticeship in 2013 from the New Hampshire Council for the Arts, during which time she studied intensively with fiddler Lissa Schneckenburger (Low Lily). She has since moved to Glasgow to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS), where Scottish and Irish styles influenced her playing, resulting in a captivating transatlantic blend of innovation and grit. Along with her trio, she also plays with Christy Scott and Eriska, and was a member of the RCS’s hand-picked band Úr in 2017 - along with other collaborations in the States and Scotland. Between all these projects, she has performed at Celtic Connections, Celtic Colours and the Boston Celtic Music Festival, as well as other festivals around Scotland and New England.
Rory Matheson hails from Sutherland, on the north-west coast of Scotland. Growing up playing the accordion, he changed his hand to the piano during high school and found a passion for accompanying. Rory’s style is heavily influenced by the music of the highlands and islands; however, elements of jazz and blues have also influenced his music, creating a powerful and sympathetic rhythm player. He was a finalist in the 2018 Young Traditional Musician of the Year competition and is a member of TRIP.
Craig Baxter is a drummer and percussionist from Clackmannanshire, near Stirling. He started drumming from the age of eight, playing pipe band snare drum with the Royal Burgh of Stirling, but has recently taken up other forms of percussion. He is now focusing mostly on the bodhran after starting a degree in traditional music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Craig plays with a number of artists around Glasgow, including TRIP and Gnoss.
